What Is Korean Age?
Korea traditionally used a unique age-counting system where everyone is 1 year old at birth and gains a year every January 1st, regardless of their actual birthday. This meant Koreans were typically 1-2 years "older" than their international age. In June 2023, Korea officially adopted the international age system (만나이) for all legal and administrative purposes. This calculator shows all three age systems side by side for comparison.

FAQ
What changed in 2023?
On June 28, 2023, Korea's 'Age Standardization Act' took effect, making international age (만나이) the sole legal standard. Traditional Korean age is no longer used in laws, contracts, or official documents.
How is Korean age different from international age?
In the Korean system, you're 1 at birth and gain a year on January 1st. So someone born December 31st would be '2 years old' the next day (January 1st) by Korean age, but only days old by international age.
What is 연나이 (year age)?
Year age is simply the current year minus the birth year, regardless of whether your birthday has passed. It was used in some specific Korean laws like youth protection regulations.
What is 띠 (Chinese zodiac)?
The 12-year cycle of zodiac animals (쥐, 소, 호랑이, 토끼, 용, 뱀, 말, 양, 원숭이, 닭, 개, 돼지) is widely used in Korean culture. Your 띠 is determined by your birth year.
