What Is a Subway Fare Calculator?

This subway fare calculator computes Korean metropolitan subway fares based on travel distance. The Korean subway system uses a distance-based fare structure: a base fare covers the first 10km, with additional charges applied for longer distances. This tool supports all three passenger types (adult, youth, child) and both payment methods (transportation card and cash).

How to Calculate Subway Fare

  1. Select Passenger Type — Choose Adult (어른), Youth (청소년, age 13-18), or Child (어린이, age 6-12)
  2. Set Distance — Use the slider or enter your travel distance in kilometers
  3. Choose Payment — Select Transportation Card (교통카드) or Cash (현금)
  4. Calculate — View the total fare with a detailed breakdown of base and extra charges

Why Use This Fare Calculator?

  • Accurate Korean Fares — Uses the official distance-based pricing: ₩100 per 5km (10-50km) and ₩100 per 8km (50km+)
  • Card vs Cash — Compare both payment methods to see how much you save with a transportation card
  • All Passenger Types — Supports adult, youth, and child fare rates
  • Transfer Info — Learn about the free transfer system within 30 minutes
  • No App Needed — Works instantly in your browser without installation

FAQ

What is the base subway fare in Korea?

The base fare for adults is ₩1,400 with a transportation card or ₩1,500 with cash. Youth pay ₩800/₩900, and children pay ₩500/₩600. This covers the first 10km of travel.

How does the transfer discount work?

When using a transportation card (T-money, Cashbee), you can transfer between subway and bus within 30 minutes (60 minutes after 9 PM) without paying another base fare. Up to 4 transfers are free within the time limit.

Why is the card fare cheaper than cash?

The Korean government encourages the use of transportation cards for efficiency. Card users save ₩100 per ride and also get free transfer privileges that cash users don't receive.

What age qualifies as youth or child?

Youth (청소년) fare applies to ages 13-18, and Child (어린이) fare applies to ages 6-12. Children under 6 ride free (up to 3 children per accompanying adult).

Does this work for all Korean cities?

This calculator uses the Seoul Metropolitan area fare structure, which also applies to the greater Seoul capital region including Incheon and Gyeonggi Province. Other cities may have slightly different base fares.
